Good morning everyone and welcome back to my blog roll. I’ve decided to give a quick update today as I have been somewhat distracted from over the past few evenings. A whole other world has had my attention these past few days.
A Complete other world
I was chatting to a friend last week. They asked if I could help them out with a little project they are currently working on. As I have many years experience with web design and development, they asked if I could build them a website for their new nightclub.
At first, I was a little surprised as I had no idea they had any plans to take a club on. But then they enlightened me to the fact that it wasn’t an actual “Bricks and Mortar” nightclub of the conventional world. Instead, it was a virtual club in the cyber world of Second Life.
What is Second Life?
Second Life is a virtual reality social platform that is similar to the Metaverse (a virtual platform run by Meta – formerly known as Facebook). It has over 8,000 active members at the moment and is completely user built and caters for everyone.
It’s a bit like taking GTA, social media, Youtube and Amazon and sticking them all together to make the ultimate game that is actually real. Every avatar (your Second Life character) is actually another member and anything you say or do within the game actually has a knock on effect. Just like in real life.
To whom does this other world belong?
Second Life has a vast range of users and a whole load of interests are covered. In fact, pretty much most things you can do in real life, you can do in Second Life. It kinda works vice versa too.
There are of course a few bits n pieces that you can do in Second Life that you could really do. Things such as teleporting and flying. But this just substitutes the bus or plane you’d catch in reality. So the principle stays the same really.
Some people come on to build fancy properties, some to chat and socialise with friends and go shopping. Yes! You can buy all sorts of things from food to clothes which you can use to customise your avatar and have looking the bees knees.
Again, just like real life and it also has an adult section too that some people use, although, I have to say, without the need of even checking, cartoon sex doesn’t do it for me, but whatever floats ones boat i guess. The main thing is that many people do and its becoming a rapidly expanding world that is overtaking the Metaverse itself.
This raises a lot of opportunities to have fun, and also make some money too.
It’s own currency
The platform even has its very own currency, the Linden dollar (L$) which is a real crypto currency. So you can buy and sell it on the exchange. There are many ways you can make money on the platform too. Once you’ve earned plenty Lindens, you can exchange them for your own currency and spend it on whatever you like.
So if you want to, you can actually in effect earn a living by playing Second Life. In fact, there are many people out there that do just that.
One of the biggest money earners in the game seems to be real estate, which is once again on par with the real world. Basically, a user can buy a SIM which is a bit of land on the game and divide it up into plots and rent them out to net a profit. Many people develop their land too and build fancy apartments, shops, clubs, even worm farms. This of course boosts the rental so makes you even more profit.
By reinvesting the profit and buying more land, one can soon build up enough of an income that they can actually life offline from the money they make online.
The Linden has become one of the worlds largest user generated crypto currencies around with over $35 each month moving between players.
Thought I’d have a go
Well, I have to admit, the whole thing has me intrigued. So I signed up a few days ago and have been playing about on it these past few nights, mainly just working out where everything is at the moment. there are a lot of controls and a lot of places and area.
There’s a lot of exploring to be done still. So, I’ve been enjoying mucking around with all the controls and working out what’s what. I have been having fun customising my avatar and trying on all different clothes, hair. skin tone, eyelashes and tattoos, etc
I’ve also been enjoying having a look around the virtual universe here and wandering from street to street as well as teleporting to find loads of wonderful things. I’ve even been finding Gold. Many of the shops charge for clothes and food etc. But you can also find free food and I today found a shop full of free clothes. So needless to say, i bought every outfit there was and a whole load of tattoos to try. I’ve went for the snake on my back for now.
It’s pretty exiting to be honest. I cant wait to get right into it.
Time to have some fun
But I am looking into the many different ways to make money of Second Life at the moment. Whilst I’m getting the hang of everything else. Then I hope to get started earning some Lindens to start making enough money that I never have to work again.
But if that doesnt work, I intend to enjoy the game whilst trying. So wish me luck
Better still, check it out. It’s Free to play and you can earn Linden if you dont want to spend a penny its easy enough to bootstrap it. If you do decide to come on to the platform, or are already a member, then come n say hello. I’m MissKaralyne in the game.
See you in there!
