Most of us get up each day for work. Whether we have to travel a distance to get to work, or work from the comfort of our own home, we’re used to working. We understand that to be how the world works. But have you ever considered what a world without work would be like?
Most people would tend to shrug that idea off as “Utopian Idealism”. But why not? Especially when we have the technology to do it. Perhaps at one time, the idea that everyone has to work was a reality. But realities change with the times. I beleive we have every possibility of living in a world without work and I’m gonna do my best to quickly explain how.
Is it Possible to have a world without work?
Once upon a time, when bakers made bread and farmers grew food, everyone’s hands were busy. Either making things, shipping them or selling them. Even the 1% who just made profit still had their hands busy counting their money. But along came technology and changed all that. Now the rich guy can just look at their bank balance on a screen. The seller can sell internationally online. Most manufacturing is done by machine and it wont be long before Driverless Trucks and Trains are doing the bit of logistics that still need done.
Sure, there still in many cases needs to be a human to operate the machine. Well, that is true as it always has been even back in Ned Ludds time. But more and more of those necessary jobs are being buried by the machine. The ability to run a whole processing plant on machine alone is definitely there. So, its not even a case of making it possible that nobody has to work. That’s already in the bag. They just need to tune things a little finer and incorporate it into everyday life.
So, now we need to work out what were gonna do when it comes to that and how we manage things now. This is a vital time we are in at the moment because it will happen a lot sooner than we may think. I mean, look at some of the dramatic changes that took place over the COVID-19 Pandemic that we’d have never before thought possible. All it takes is for things to fall into place and the way we are accustomed to doing things can quickly change. We need to make sure that when they do, everyone’s fed and watered.
But the Greedy will always take over?
Yeah, well they will if we just stand by and let them yeah. I’m pretty sure they will. Ya know, when I hear that same old line, it annoys me. It’s more of an apathetic dismissal than an actual tactical problem. A cop out. A reason to abandon hope and get back to work. Head down arse up and dont do too much thinking. Yeah. If everyone’s just doing that, then definitely, the greedy will indeed take over.
The fact is, the greedy will certainly do their best to make as much for their own pockets as they can and want as much power as they can get. But we have the ability to stop that just like we’ve always had. That’s why what we do now is so important. For what we do now will determine how things go later when nobody has to work. It’s important that we set things in place now that will prevent the greedy just taking over and will ensure that everyone has a living income.
How will we survive in a world without work?
So, of course, the obvious question on most people’s minds is “What will we do for money if there’s no work?” But just because it’s a world without work, it doesn’t mean it has to be a world without wages. For many, the concept or Work and Wages go hand in hand and are hard to separate. Afterall, the culture and world we have been used to living in for so long has told us that we must work for money. That no money comes from doing nothing.
Sure, in the old days that was certainly the case but now we have the machines to do all the work for us. So nowadays with the technological ability we have, we must think about money differently. Obviously, the greedy will want the biggest portion. But we need to make sure that everyone gets a decent income. Not only an income decent enough to survive on, but an income good enough to live and live well on.
When you see the bank balances some of these oligarchs and tycoons have, theres no reason why there shouldn’t be enough to go round. Trillionaires with more money they could possibly spend in a hundred lifetimes. They could lose three quarters of their wealth and still be untouched by it while it goes to giving millions of people decent standard of living. They can still roll around in their heaps of cash like scrooge mcduck but the world will be a better place. Everyone’s a winner. Even the greedy.

Even once the machine is able to do all the necessary work. I’m sure there will always be jobs needing done by hand. But with a good system that works, these vocations will attract the right people for the job. So all in all, it will create a better society and system altogether.
